Kai Havertz
Player Biography
Kai Lukas Havertz, born June 11, 1999, in Aachen, Germany, is a professional footballer playing as an attacking midfielder or forward for Arsenal FC and the German national team. Raised in Mariadorf, Alsdorf, he started football at age four with Alemannia Mariadorf, where his grandfather, Richard, was chairman. He joined Bayer Leverkusen’s academy at 11, debuting for their senior team in 2016 at 17, becoming the club’s youngest-ever Bundesliga debutant (17 years, 126 days). In 2017, he scored his first goal, setting another record as Leverkusen’s youngest goalscorer. Havertz holds records as the youngest to reach 50 and 100 Bundesliga appearances.
In 2020, Chelsea signed him for €84 million (£72 million), making him their second-most expensive signing. He scored the winning goal in the 2021 UEFA Champions League final, also winning the 2021 UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup (scoring the decisive goal in the latter). In 2023, he joined Arsenal for £65 million, contributing 20 goals and assists in his first season. Internationally, Havertz debuted for Germany in 2018, the first player born in 1999 to do so, and has played at Euro 2020, Euro 2024, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Son of a lawyer mother and policeman father, Havertz grew up with siblings Leah and Jan in a football-loving family. He married childhood sweetheart Sophia Weber in July 2024, and they announced their first child in November 2024. Standing 6’3” (1.93m), he’s known for versatility, technical skill, and clutch performances, earning the nickname “Alleskönner” (jack of all trades). His idols include Toni Kroos, Ronaldinho, and Zinedine Zidane.
Arsenals 13 league titles, record 14 FA Cups, two League Cups, one Cup Winners’ Cup, one Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and 17 Community Shields make it England’s third-most successful club. Its 2003-04 unbeaten season remains unmatched in modern English football. The club’s rivalries, notably with Tottenham Hotspur, and iconic players like Thierry Henry (record 228 goals), Dennis Bergkamp, and Tony Adams define its legacy.
