History

Begining

The Primeira Liga is Portugals top professional football division, and until 1989 the only professional football league in the country. With clubs like Benfica, Porto and Sporting, it has always been one of Europes biggest leagues. These three teams have won practically all titles since 1938-39, when the competition had its inaugural season.

In the present format, the tournament consists of six stages, with the first stage taking place in early February. The six surviving teams from the first stage join 26 teams in the second stage, which consists of eight groups of four teams each. The eight group winners and eight runners-up enter the knockout stages, which end with the final in November or December. The winner of the Copa Libertadores becomes eligible to play in the FIFA Club World Cup and the Recopa Sudamericana.

Until 1941, only teams from Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra and Setúbal took part in the competition. That year, two clubs from Braga and Algarve were admitted. The league finally acquired a more nation-wide character in 1945, when any team from whichever region of the country could win a spot in the First Division, as long as they earned promotion from the Second Division. Benfica are the most decorated club in the country. They have won the championship title more times than their two biggest rivals, Porto and Sporting. They have also lifted the Taça de Portugal trophy (Cup of Portugal, the second biggest national football competition) many more times than any other team.

League system

Last year’s International Series Macau presented by Wynn was won by LIV Golf reserve player John Catlin with the American seeing off Spanish youngster David Puig of Fireballs GC in a thrilling play-off. Catlin had carded a historic third round of 59 on the Saturday, while Puig hit back with an impressive final round of 60 to draw level on a thrilling final day.

Instead of operating as an association of independently owned teams, MLS is a single entity in which each team is owned and controlled by the leagues investors. The investor-operators control their teams as owners control teams in other leagues, and are commonly (but inaccurately) referred to as the teams owners. The leagues closed membership makes it one of the worlds few soccer leagues that does not use promotion and relegation, which is uncommon in North America. MLS headquarters are in New York City.

Campeonato de Portugal (former Portuguese Second Division) is a non-professional league that has been the third tier since 2013. Below that tier are groups of leagues divided by districts. In 2007, Taça da Liga (Portuguese League Cup) was founded. It is a competition between teams from the two top domestic leagues, Primeira Liga and LigaPro. Vitória de Setúbal became the winners of the first edition, played in the 2007-2008 season.

The United States, no stranger to hosting major sporting events, will roll out the red carpet for this tournament. Matches will be played across multiple cities, with iconic venues like the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, and MetLife Stadium in New Jersey expected to feature prominently. FIFA has yet to release the official list of host cities and stadiums, but the promise of world-class facilities and passionate crowds is already generating excitement.
